Randolph Carter has had a lifelong obsession with magic. As a young boy, he got an apprenticeship with an old mage, and had high hopes of someday attending the Nolani Academy of the Arcane Arts, the most prestigious school of magic in the world. But The Searing left none of Ascalon's academies of magic intact, leaving a generation of young mages to be haphazardly schooled in magic by whoever they could find to teach them, or to try to learn dangerous arts on their own. So Randolph has become a traveller, searching the land for every last bit of magical lore he can find, getting training in various skills from whoever can teach him, or observing other casters in battle and burning their spells into his brain with the help of learning signets.

A harsh life and no doubt some natural inclination have led Randolph to focus his learning primary on the destructive power of fire. He has a talent for channelling his rage into pure destructive magic, and enjoys killing in a way no one should. He is not immoral, but he is fighting to retain a sense of human kindness in a world that seems to have stacked the deck against him, and when life has not been kind to you, it is far too easy to be cruel, and apathy becomes a survival trait. He's searching for some great cause or purpose, hoping to find something to care about again.
